Catherine Rando (nee Nestico), aged 96, of Paterson, passed away peacefully on January 7, 2026, surrounded by her adoring family. Born in Sant’Andrea, Calabria, Italy, on March 20, 1929, Catherine embarked on a journey that would lead her to a life filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories after her family immigrated to the United States and settled in West Paterson.
Catherine formed enduring friendships during her years at Passaic Valley High School, where she wove her spirit of warmth and camaraderie into the lives of those around her. After graduating, she dedicated herself as an executive assistant, a role that showcased her remarkable organizational skills and attention to detail.
In 1957, Catherine moved to Paterson, where she embarked on the most important chapter of her life—raising her family. She was the devoted wife of the late Ramon Rando, who held an unwavering love for her throughout their 64 years of marriage. Together, they built a home filled with affection and joy. Catherine was a cherished mother to James Rando and his wife Patricia, Nicholas Rando, and Michele Rando Wan and her husband George. Each of her children will carry forward her legacy of kindness and strength.
As a grandmother, Catherine’s heart knew no bounds. She lovingly embraced the roles of grandmother and great-grandmother, showering her grandchildren—Raymond Rando and his wife Jessica, Michael Rando and his wife Traci, Caitlyn Wan Smith and her husband Zachary, Christina Wan, and Alexander Wan—with affection that knew no end. Being “Big Grandma” to Leo and Matteo Rando brought her immeasurable joy, and her spirit will live on through them.
Catherine was predeceased by her beloved sister, Victoria Mongiardo, a bond that she cherished deeply. While she may now be gone, her memory will forever weave through the hearts of her nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
Those fortunate enough to know Catherine were often captivated by her fierce spirit and sly humor, traits that made every interaction a delightful experience. She was a prolific crocheter whose hands effortlessly transformed yarn into beautiful creations. Her unparalleled talent for cooking and baking made her table a haven for family gatherings, where guests always found it difficult to say no to “just one more” helping, all thanks to her irresistible culinary charm.
As a gracious hostess, loyal friend, and exemplary matriarch, Catherine's life was marked by an infinite love and kindness that extended to all who crossed her path. Her legacy will be felt for generations to come, as she taught those around her the art of generosity and the power of a warm embrace.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate her life on Monday, January 12, 2026, from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Marrocco Memorial Chapel, located at 470 Colfax Avenue, Clifton, NJ. Funeral services will commence on Tuesday, departing the funeral home at 10:15 AM, followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Gerard Majella Church at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
Catherine Rando's spirit will remain alive in our hearts, her laughter forever echoing in our memories, and her love continuing to guide us. She will be profoundly missed.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Catherine’s name to the St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital would be greatly appreciated. http://fundraising.stjude.org/goto/CatherineRando
