Sandra Veronica Weldon (née Grecco) passed away peacefully on Friday, July 25, in New York City. She was 76.
Sandra is survived by her beloved sister and brother-in-law, Louisa and Paul Schooling, and her brother and sister-in-law, Philip and Ellen Grecco. She also leaves behind four cherished nieces and nephews and their spouses: Kara and Christopher Niles, Jason and Ashley Schooling, Cristi and Andy Coats, and Michael and Kristin Grecco. Sandra was a loving great-aunt to Jacob Niles, Fiona Niles, Emmett Schooling, Charlotte Grecco, and Bo Grecco. She will also be missed by her two devoted dogs, Pinky and Zeppole.
Sandra was raised in Clifton, New Jersey, and after graduating from Montclair State University, she moved to San Francisco, where she married John Weldon. She earned her Master’s degree and began her teaching career as a dance instructor at the College of Marin in Marin County, California.
A gifted performer and passionate arts advocate, Sandra's contributions as a singer, actress, dancer, choreographer, and director were numerous. Most notably, she founded and led a community theater group in Marin for over 30 years. Among the many productions she directed were West Side Story, Oklahoma, Little Shop of Horrors, and Annie — the latter of which she also choreographed and performed in.
Sandra was honored with several accolades throughout her career, including a nomination for Outstanding Service to Arts Education, an award recognizing 10 years of dedicated service to the Ross Valley Community for Schools, and the Second Annual Danny Award for her performance as Maeve in Ark Row.
Upon retiring, Sandra returned to the East Coast and settled in New York City — a place she adored. There, she remained active in the performing arts, participating in productions at the 92nd Street Y.M.C.A. and Don’t Tell Mama piano bar. She also founded the Actor’s Reading Group and continued her lifelong love of learning through dance, voice, and drama classes.
Visitation will be held at Marrocco Memorial Chapel, 470 Colfax Ave., Clifton, N.J., on Friday, August 1, from 2:00–4:00 PM and 7:00–9:00 PM. A funeral service will take place on Saturday, August 2, at 9:30 AM at Marrocco Memorial Chapel, followed by interment at Calvary Cemetery. A repast will follow.
Sandra’s legacy lives on through her family, her students, and the countless lives she touched through her artistry and dedication to the performing arts.
